An Introduction

Scouts is the third section of the Scouting movement. From the first experimental camp for 20 boys in 1907, the movement now has an estimated 28 million members worldwide, and in the UK alone there are over 499,000 boys and girls involved in Scouting. An increase in adult volunteers means that more and more young people are now able to take part in their own big adventure.

Bristol 227th Scouts

Scouts is for boys and girls aged between 10 and 14.

Scouts meet on Thursdays, from 7.00 – 9.00pm.  The Troop Leader is called Kay Shuttleworth.  We are very lucky to have Carol and Diain as assistant Leaders.  Steve, who has been an amazing Assistant Leader for several years now, will be leaving us in the Summer of 2015.  That will be a sad day for us all and will leave a huge gap in the team.  We are already on the look-out for someone enthusiastic and fun to join us as part of the team.

Badges

Although Scouts work toward badges during their weekly meetings, the activities are usually quite adventurous.  For example...

Craft badge - whittling wood with a knife and also making working rockets

Watersports badge - scuba diving and kayaking

Mechanics badge - taking apart an old go-kart and rebuilding the engine

Aviation badge - camping at an airfield and flying a plane

Angler badge - working with a local fishing club and boat fishing weekend

DIY badge - making owl boxes; replacing windows and making new doors

Hiker badge - climbing Snowdon or walking to Bath and cycling back

For badge positioning, please see the downloadable Badge Positioning document, on the Downloads page.

Activities

We camp indoors and outdoors, cook on open fires without pots and pans and meet other Scouts through District and County activities.

We enter competitions against other Scouts such as shooting, archery, camping and cooking.

We encourage our Scouts to appreciate other peoples thoughts, feelings, religion, culture and choices.

With more uniformed Leaders we could do even more than the above.  If you are interested in helping in any way for any amount of time, go to our Contact page.

See the News and Photo pages to see what we have been up to recently!

Costs

Subs are currently £35 per term (payable 3 terms per year at the beginning of each term).  Camps and some outings will incur an additional charge.

Cheques for subs and trips should be made out to '227th Bristol Scouts'.  This goes towards captitation costs to headquarters, camping equipment, badges, activities and the upkeep of 227th HQ – heating, lighting, repairs, etc.
